1. Where should I place my security product?
The placement depends on what you want to guard. In many cases the best position is
near the center of the store or home that you want to watch. Keep in mind that the
scan radius is spherical. This means that if you have a two-story building, you might
consider placing it on the 2nd floor or in the ceiling of the first floor.
InkWelle Security Products come with a great tool called the RangeFinder that can help you make the placement decision. Read more about it in the answer #2 below.
2. What scan radius should I set?
InkWelle home and business security products can scan a spherical area up to 96
meters.
Once you have placed the object in an appropriate, central location, measure the
distance to the perimeter of your building or your property. The radius you set
depends on what you want to monitor. For example, if you want to monitor who is
going into a certain room, place the security item in the center of that room and limit
the radius to cover just the area of that room.
If your concern is privacy, then note that chat travels 20 meters. To ensure private
conversations, set the WatchDog's scan radius to 25 meters and it will let you know if
anyone else is in "earshot" of your chatting.
WatchDog, WatchDogPRO, and EasyZap come with a free RangeFinder. This device
helps you to measure ranges for setting up security scan systems. You set it up at the
position where you think you might want to put your security system and then click on it. It will scan and
then announce its distance from you. Keep moving around the area and watching the
announcements. When you have covered the full area you want to scan, you can stop
RangeFinder's announcements by touching it. Use the largest distance that
RangeFinder announced and enter that as the scan range for your security system.
3. Can I use InkWelle security products on group-owned land?
If your land is group owned, make sure that the WatchDog, WatchDogPRO, or EasyZap
object's group is set properly. Note that by default, other members of your group will
have access to configure your security item using the menu or chat. However, most
InkWelle security products will allow you to limit their access in the Configuration
Notecard. Finally, you may wish to set your security product to ignore members your
group in its scans.
To Deed, Or Not To Deed:In some cases the product will work fine without Ddeding.
However, there have been cases where SL quirks have caused
unreliable results in undeeded products on group-owned land. If you experience
unreliability, then you will need to Deed your object to the group. NOTE: It is because of this issue that we urge people who are renters to first verify that (1) they are members of the group that owns the land on which they rent, and also (2) that they have the ability to deed items to the group.
If You Deed: It is crucial that you ensure that you have enabled group access to the
object prior to deeding it. A deeded object is not able to communicate via Chat or
OwnerSay. If you want to receive communications from your security product via one
of these methods, then use the Repeater provided with the product.
4. What tracking information is available from InkWelle security products?
EasyZap tracks the avatar names that it ejects. It keeps a log that is 20 entries deep.
It does NOT keep a log of people who were merely warned, as this would essentially
be an enormous log.
WatchDog tracks the visitors to your property. It keeps a log with a maximum of 30
entries.
WatchDog PRO keeps a log of up to about 200 visitors to your property. It also has a
special reporting feature called Traffic Report which allows you to see at a glance how
many people are visiting your business and at what times of day. The Traffic Report is especiually useful if
you plan to import the data into a spreadsheet for further analysis. See the answer to #5 below for more about that.
5. How can I use the information from WatchDog PRO?
Here are a few examples of how you can use information from WatchDog PRO:
#1) You have a store and want to maintain a list of everyone who visits along with the
time that they visited. Set up WatchDog PRO to collect your logs and have them IMed
to you, then copy and paste your logs into a spreadsheet or other program for storage.
#2) You would like to determine the effectiveness of a new ad for your store. Use
WatchDog PRO to monitor the traffic for a few days before the ad, then monitor for a
few days afterward and compare the results.
#3) You would like to determine the optimum time of day to have a hired greeter in
your store. Use WatchDog PRO's "Traffic" report to show the tally of visitors in your
store broken down by hour to reveal the busiest time in your store.
*Note - Business users typically import Traffic Reports and log data into RL tools such
as a spreadsheet or database to analyze or chart data to spot trends.
6. Can I use WatchDog or WatchDog PRO to keep people out of my home or store?
WatchDog products will not ban or eject people. If you want to keep most people out
and only let specific people in (which is commonly the case for personal or home use),
then you should use the EasyZap product.
If you want to allow most people in but only keep specific people out (which is
commonly the case for business use), then you should add the exact avatar names to
the ban list for your property.
7. Will WatchDog prevent people from spying on me or my customers?
WatchDog and WatchDog PRO will NOT protect your privacy if someone is using a
spybot or other spying tool. For (theoretically total) private chatting, IM is
recommended. Also note that there are ways to move an avatar's "camera" very long
distances, so there is no guarantee against visual observation. (If you are getting the
feeling that true 100% privacy is very hard to come by in SL, you are correct!)
8. How do I use the Visitor Gifts and Greeting Features in WatchDog PRO?
To set WatchDog PRO to send a greeting to each person who is detected, updated the
SetGreeting command in the configuration notecard. Keep in mind that "less is more"
with your greeting!
In addition to saying a custom greeting, WatchDog PRO can be set to give items to
every visitor who comes within the radius you set. You can even set the name of a
folder that will be created in that person's inventory to hold your gift. You can give
one or more landmarks, notecards, objects, or textures.
For both the greeting and the gift, it will show as coming from the security object. For
this reason, we suggest you rename the object to match the name of your business.
9. Why are some commands only available by editing the notecard?
While it is convenient for you to use chat or menu to command InkWelle Security
Products, there is a tradeoff in that the settings made in this way are stored in volatile memory.
This means that if there is a problem on the grid or a reset, you risk losing your
settings. In order to ensure that you have a backup of your settings, the commands
that make up the more complex settings and are used least often are issued by editing
the notecard.
Some commands such as Notify and Radius are available on the menu as well as in the
configuration notecard. Note that the setting you make *last* is the one that will be in
effect. For example, if you use the Menu to set Radius to 20, then go into the
Configuration Notecard and set Radius to 30, the setting of 30 is the one that will be in
effect.
10. How do I control what sound is played when people are detected or ejected?
The WatchDog, WatchDog PRO, and EasyZap products will play the sound that appears
first in their contents, which is sorted alphabetically. This means that if you have files
in your contents called "bell" and "chime," the product will use the "bell" sound.
To load a new sound, simply copy the sound file into the object's content folder.
11. How do I change the object that my InkWelle Security product uses?
It is easy to select a different look for the WatchDog, WatchDog PRO, and EasyZap
products by moving their contents into the contents of another object. Note that it is
important that you are the owner of the object that you move the security products
into. Follow these steps:
1. Right click on the original object and choose "Open," then click the "Copy to
Inventory" button. It will give you a message saying that some items are not
transferable and will be moved. Select OK. This will create a folder in the root level of
your inventory that has the same name as the item you copied from.
2. Rez the new object. Go into edit mode then open the Contents tab for the object. Copy ALL the
items that were in the original security object into this new object.
3. Be sure to name the product something other than "Object" so you will be able to
find it in your Inventory!
12. Can I combine the WatchDog and EasyZap products into one object?
If you run both the WatchDog PRO (or WatchDog) and EasyZap products, you can
combine them into a single object if you wish. The scripts will not interfere with each
other, however when you touch the object, it will bring up both menus. Simply follow
the directions given for question #11 above, placing the
contents of both products into a single object.
13. Why doesn't the time in the timestamps match the time in RL or even SL?
Please note that all times and dates used in the logs and traffic reports are in GMT -
Gweenwich Mean Time. It is also sometimes called UTC or Zulu Time. This is the
standard time used around the world. Why? Because SL scripts have very little space to run in, and every feature you add means reducing or removing others. Adding in a way for you to set the time would mean that your Allow lists and other important features would not be as robust.

Unless you live in the same time zone as GMT (in Greenwich, England), you may want
to add or subtract hours to normalize it to your time zone. For example, to normalize
GMT to match the time zone in SL, you subtract 7 hours (this all depends on the time
of year, of course, due to Daylight Savings Time).

14. Are there PDF versions of the user manuals?

15. Commands I add in my EasyZap configuration notecard don't work.
There are four things to make sure that you do:
First, make sure that you do NOT have a pound sign (#) in front of the command. The # tells SL to ignore the line!
Next, be sure that you are editing the notecard that is inside your security object and NOT a backup
or other copy of the notecard that is in your inventory.
Third, be sure that you Save your notecard before closing it.
And finally, be sure that each command is alone on a line by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard to move to the next line... don't use tabs or groups of spaces. For example,
if you want to allow two people in your EasyZap notecard, be sure to enter them like this:
allow John Doe
allow Sarah Jane
...and not like this:
allow John Doe allow Sarah Jane
16. In SuperZap -- how do I remove someone from the "Ejected" list?
Once someone is ejected, they are put on the "Ejected" list. If they return to the protected area, they will be IMMEDIATELY ejected wiothout warning. (You use the "Forget" command to set the number of hours that someone will stay on that list.) If someone is on your Ejected list and you now want them to be allowed, then you must add them to the "Allow" list. The ehing is -- you need to use the chat to add them, as the Intruder Action Dialog will NOT appear for someone on the Ejected list. To add them via chat, say: /2 allow avatar name replacing �avatar name� with the name of the person to allow (be sure to spell it right and match case!). (This assumes that your chat channel is 2).
17. My SuperZap says it ejected someone--but it didn't.
First, if you are using SuperZap on land that is owned by a group, make sure that your SuperZap is deeded to that group (see answer #18 below). Next make sure that your SuperZap is not in Test Mode. Do this by clicking on ZapMode on the Config menu, or use the zapmose chat command.
18. How do I "deed" things?
In order for an object to be able to Eject or TP somebody away, it must be deeded to the group that owns the land (this only applies to you if you are uisng the product on group-owned land). Here's how to deed something:
Go into edit mode, then go to the general tab. Click on "Set to group" then select the correct group (the same group that owns the land). Then check "Share with group." This will make the blue "Deed" button available. Click the "Deed" button and that'll do it.
